Nursing is not just a career it’s a calling for me. Looking backing into my childhood my family had been through a couple medical challenges with my siblings growing up. My grandfather was a retired physician and was an amazing resource to help reassure as well as simply the medical jargon. Having that gift to explain challenging medical scenarios and translate them into non-medical verbiage in a calming fashion, was my motivation throughout nursing school. The world needs more of these advocates and medical translators, hospital healthcare professionals often rush through the details and leave patients confused or at risk. If we make the time to sit and educate correctly, the chance of error or re-admission to the hospital will decrease big time.
I love being a patient’s advocate. When a patient feels supported, feels connected with the process, and has an advocate the environment for healing improves. Patients can voice their concerns and needs comfortably. My delivery of care is given with thoughtfulness and dignity because that’s the intention.
